    Proposal summary:

This project will use both fish and fish waste to develop a fish-based hydrolysate which will be used for direct marketing or as the basis for developing a fat/protein/lipid (FPL) source in fish feeds.  The project coordinator will generate hydrolysates for up to five species of locally grown fish.  Each of the five hydrolysates will be assessed to determine the value associated with each.  An assessment of each hydrolysate will be conducted to determine the FPL associated with each in an attempt to identify a protein base which matches the known diet of perch and bluegill.

    Project objectives from proposal:

    • Generate up to five fish hydrolysates from species locally grown in Northeastern Wisconsin.
    • Prepare an assessment of the value added from each species from which the hydrolysates were prepared.
    • Prepare an assay of species specific hydrolysates to identify fat/protein/lipid content which might be suitable for deriving a fish-based protein source for food.
    • Conduct a comparative study of garden plots using hydrolysate versus a control.
