Youth will be introduced to the basics of plant propagation from seed, their value and unique features, and how to begin to seed-save for future plantings. They will learn how to create conditions where these seeds can be propagated, distributed throughout the community, and grown in their urban garden for harvesting the main crop as well as seed-saving. These then can be used in the teaching kitchen, distributed to neighbors, and used to propagate more seeds for the program.
Project objectives from proposal:
- Introduce youth to the nutritional and agricultural value of organic heirloom seeds
- Provide urban youth with practical skills for growing their own food using organic heirloom seeds
- Teach youth how to build a sustainable model for growing and distributing organic heirloom seeds and vegetables
