The Small Flock Poultry Fundamentals for Extension and Veterinary Professionals webinar series is an eight-session professional development program designed to build confidence and practical knowledge among professionals working with small flock clientele. The series provides a foundation in poultry biology, housing, nutrition, welfare, disease recognition, biosecurity, food safety, and reportable diseases while strengthening participants' ability to effectively communicate with and support diverse poultry owners. Each webinar combines science-based information with practical recommendations that can be readily applied in educational programs, veterinary practice, and client interactions. The series serves as a valuable resource for professionals who are new to poultry as well as those seeking to expand their existing knowledge, equipping participants with tools and resources to better support the communities they serve.

Session #8: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Other Reportable Diseases
Learn to recognize red flags that may indicate a poultry health concern requires additional attention, know when to escalate or report a concern, and connect poultry owners with appropriate animal-health resources. Using highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) as a real-world example, the session explores how disease situations can change and why recognizing that something does not fit is an important skill for professionals supporting small-flock owners.
