About
Dr. Jake Thorne serves as the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Sheep and Goat Specialist based at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in San Angelo, Texas. His Extension and applied research programs focus on small ruminant production systems, with emphasis on sheep genetics, parasite management, producer education, and the practical application of emerging technologies within the sheep and goat industry. Dr. Thorne works closely with producers, industry organizations, and university collaborators to develop educational programs and applied research initiatives that address real-world production challenges faced by commercial and seedstock operations.
Dr. Thorne coordinates statewide and regional Extension programming related to sheep and goat health, genetics, reproduction, and sustainable production practices. He regularly conducts producer workshops, field days, and hands-on trainings focused on topics such as fecal egg counting, FAMACHA scoring, reproductive technologies, genetic selection tools, and performance data collection. He also leads professional development programs for agricultural professionals, including sheep shearing and pregnancy ultrasound schools.
In addition to Extension programming, Dr. Thorne is actively involved in applied research projects focused on parasite resistance, genetic improvement, and sustainable livestock management systems. He collaborates with national industry groups and university researchers on projects designed to improve producer adoption of performance-based selection and management technologies. Dr. Thorne also hosts the American Sheep Industry Association Research Update Podcast, which highlights current research and emerging issues impacting the U.S. sheep industry
