About
Katie Brandt has over 20 years of farming experience in Michigan, and also worked a bit on farms in Tennessee and Trinidad. She was a farmworker for 5 seasons on organic and sustainable vegetable farms and a few years balancing farmwork with a full-time position at MDARD to help homeowners reduce groundwater pollution risks of fertilizers and pesticides. In 2006, she co-founded Groundswell Community Farm with Anna Hoekstra. The farm expanded from two hardworking farmers to 10 farmworkers and 3 tractors growing great quantities of vegetables. In 2017, Ms. Brandt became the Educational Programs Manager at the MSU Student Organic and taught her first cohort of the MSU Organic Farmer Training Program. She especially enjoys working alongside aspiring farmers to translate their skills and vision into attainable goals for real, working farms and agricultural endeavors. Katie has a BS with High Honors from University of Michigan and an MS in Biology with emphases in Agriculture and Ecology from Grand Valley State University.
