About
Trained in Botany and Ecology at University of Wisconsin- Madison, Margit Kaltenekker has applied her skills and expertise towards organic agroecological production throughout her career, starting on the first Certified Organic Farm in Wisconsin, Harmony Valley Farms. Working alongside many organic pioneers Margit expanded her horizons serving hundreds of organic farmers, inspecting over 200,000 acres of diverse cropping and livestock systems throughout North and South America as an Organic Certification inspector through the 1990s. As Owner/Operator of Prairie Star Farm, De Soto, KS she set a standard of exceptional quality ornamentals and organic produce. She now serves as Ag Agent w/KSRE.
As an agricultural and commercial specialty crop grower, Margit brings a broad breadth of experience working with natural and agricultural ecosystems, livestock, and specialty crop producers. Her expertise focuses on optimizing productivity and farm profitability through whole farm systems management, by optimizing photosynthesis and plant nutrient density through soil health practices. Whether helping local fruit producers identify micronutrient deficiencies, livestock producers increase forage productivity through adaptive rotational grazing, or crop producers mitigate soil erosion through cover crop strategies, she is excited to help Douglas County agriculture thrive into an increasingly robust, sustainable regional food economy.
Margit was trained by Alan Savory in Holistic Resource Management; worked with Eliot Coleman in Biointensive Methods. Having a passion for the native prairie, and as an avid birder and conservationist, she enjoys sharing a strong land ethic with those producers who care about water and wildlife habitat conservation as part of their land stewardship and feels privileged to work alongside them.
