About
Dr. Mark Rea is a professor at the Light and Health Research Center (LHRC) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He previously served as a professor and the Director of the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1988 to 2017. He is an internationally recognized expert on the physiological responses to light in various biological sensory systems. He is an expert in ultraviolet (UV) light measurement and specification and has significant experience in developing UV and photocatalytic solutions to combat plant pathogens in horticultural applications. He has extensive experience in the evaluation of UV and photocatalytic nanoparticles, such as titanium dioxide, for disease mitigation in plants. New practices in pathogen management in agriculture have been developed based on this work.
Dr. Rea’s expertise and experience will provide invaluable contributions to the proposed project. Dr. Rea has been elected as Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was co-PI of the highly successful USDA-OREI project to use UV light on strawberry crops and also served as the PI on a number of other related projects. Dr. Rea currently conducts research in circadian photobiology, lighting engineering, horticultural lighting, plant pathology, and visual performance.
