About
Dr. Worku Burayu is currently Research Assistant Professor of Agronomy at University of the Virgin Islands, School of Agriculture-Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Services. His research focus is primarily to develop a research program emphasized on integrated crop-livestock technology, soil ecology and fertility, tropical forage crop production and sustainable agriculture. His extension and education emphaseses are to promote the implementation of agronomy approaches and technologies, and dissemination of information gained from applied research projects to intended clientele using a variety of methods that are responsive to clientele needs and appropriate for the audience and situation. Dr. Burayu earned his Ph.D. in Tropical Agriculture (Agronomy) at Kasetsart University (Bangkok, Thailand). His dissertation research mainly focused on conservation agriculture as sustainable crop production system in the semi-arid and hot sub-humid environments. It explored sustainable crop management practices through water and soil conservation and integrated pest management. He has also earned a master’s degree in agronomy (MSc) and a bachelor’s degree in plant sciences (BSc) both from Haramaya (Ethiopia).
Dr. Burayu worked as a Research Scientist for almost eight years in The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension before joining University of the Virgin Islands. He developed and encouraged adoption of research based sustainable cropping systems to improve crop productivity and yield with due consideration for environmental and ecological compatibilities. Prior to moving to USA, Dr. Burayu worked at the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization (National Agricultural Research Institute) in different capacities including as division head of agronomy and crop physiology research, sugarcane research program head and a senior agronomist.
Dr. Burayu provides research-based technical and educational assistance in agronomy and sustainable forage/pastures productions system to growers, farmers/ranchers, and other agricultural clientele in the Virgin Islands. Dr. Burayu is a good standing member of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA).
