Progress report for YENC24-224
Project Information
Apprentices will engage in a
hands-on, live-in learning experience on a regenerative farm
committed to equity, justice, and environmentally-conscious
growing. Experienced farmers and guest speakers will mentor
apprentices in horticulture, agroforestry, and mushroom
cultivation. ZA educators will facilitate on-farm and
in-classroom workshops with the local Future Farmer of America
(FFA) chapter. As ZA apprentices gain confidence in their own
understanding of sustainable agriculture, they will build mentor
relationships with FFA high school students, inspiring local
youth to continue on the path of sustainable farming. Lastly, ZA
hosts family-oriented educational events on the farm to introduce
young children to food justice.
-

sustainable agriculture content. -

agricultural research in collaboration with the University of
Illinois and Yale University. -

community events, including 1 food justice event for local
families with children. -

Project Outcomes
Closing out its fourth growing season, Zumwalt Acres (ZA) is in a pivotal point of organizational development. Each year up to this point, ZA has invested in developing farm systems, infrastructure, programs, and partnerships. Much of the labor invested in that development before this year has been on a short-term, volunteer basis; leadership and fellowship members received living stipends in exchange for 3-month commitments. 2024 was the first year that ZA was able to provide year-long salaries, one for a farm manager position, and one for a youth educator, with the support of this grant. This investment in our people greatly increased our capacity for education. In 2024, ZA expanded programming by hosting 8 educational events (in contrast to 1-3 events in previous years) for 360+ participants - students, farmers, agricultural professionals, activists, and community members. We also offered a 3-month long virtual learning opportunity for youth for the first time, expanding our reach beyond audiences who can come to the farm physically. Our broader reach has been possible because of the increased organizational support of committed long-term farm leaders, especially ZA's Farm Educator, funded by this grant. ZA has already begun building off of this success by continuing to invest in ZA leaders. For the next two years, we have been awarded $54,000 through Food:Land:Opportunity to partially cover the salaries of a farm manager, a farm educator, and a program director (farm revenue and other funding in progress will complete these salaries). Moving into the next year with committed long-term staff creates the opportunity for increased education capacity and development in many realms of our work.
Project Update: The execution of this project in 2024 included a variety of hands-on learning opportunities, workshops and other farm events, and other programming for young emerging farmers and other community members. Four of the five project objectives have been met with great success, but the project needs more time to meet objective #4: "Provide mentorship and 2 workshops for 30 FFA students to enrich their curriculum with sustainable agriculture content." Relationship building with local FFA teachers has begun, but more time is needed to coordinate and execute the workshops hosted at Zumwalt Acres, a process that takes time to make sure the events meet the needs of both school and farming schedules. These workshops will be held during the 2025 growing season.
