Proposal abstract:
The Local Food Heroes Program addresses critical challenges preventing veterans from participating in sustainable agriculture through a comprehensive market garden training initiative. At our one-acre demonstration site, we combine hands-on agricultural training with business development support to create viable pathways for veterans to enter farming.
Our program objectives include:
- Establishing a market garden demonstration site using The Market Gardener Institute's (MGI) intensive methods
- Providing comprehensive agricultural training to 10-15 veterans
- Creating individual farm business plans based on micro-farm models
- Developing a replicable model for institutional land partnerships
Through structured weekly training sessions and hands-on experience, veterans learn sustainable farming practices, business planning, and resource management. Our three-tiered approach prioritizes human capital development, resource optimization, and appropriate technology integration. This ensures participants gain both practical skills and business acumen necessary for agricultural success.
The project builds on three years of progressive development, evolving from basic gardening instruction to intensive market garden training. Our experienced team, including combat veterans and agricultural professionals, provides 640 hours of comprehensive education and technical training. Through partnerships with established agricultural organizations, we create additional pathways for program graduates to continue their farming journey.
By addressing both immediate training needs and long-term support requirements, the Local Food Heroes Program creates sustainable opportunities for veterans in agriculture while developing replicable models for future initiatives.
Project objectives from proposal:
Introduction
Our Local Food Heroes Program introduces veterans to sustainable agriculture as a viable career path, leveraging their skills in discipline, resilience, and adaptability. This program at Veterans Haven North creates a model combining hands-on agricultural experience with comprehensive business development support to address both veteran employment needs and community food security challenges.
Objectives of the Project
- Establish a one-acre market garden demonstration site at Veterans Haven North's main staff courtyard, incorporating veterans into every step of the creation process as a hands-on educational experience. This training approach will particularly benefit BIPOC service members, who make up a significant portion of our veteran community, enabling them to become agricultural educators and leaders in their own communities.
- Create a robust business development curriculum that equips veterans with essential entrepreneurial skills, market analysis capabilities, and sustainable farming business models. This program will emphasize how veteran farmers can develop profitable agricultural enterprises while addressing food security needs, with special attention to creating economic opportunities for BIPOC veterans who have historically faced additional barriers to business ownership.
- Create a replicable model for land access partnerships between veteran farmers and government/non-profit institutions, using the Veterans Haven North collaboration as a blueprint. This model will specifically address historical barriers to land access that have disproportionately affected BIPOC communities.
- Provide veterans with the essential resources, knowledge, and support network needed to establish their first farming enterprise, with an emphasis on creating pathways for participants to return to their communities as agricultural leaders and entrepreneurs.
