Proposal abstract:
Improving Sunchoke Cultivability Through Cultivar Evaluation, Rhizome Phenotyping, and Farmer-Guided Selection
Sunchoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) is a resilient, low-input crop with potential for specialty food, inulin, and diversified agriculture markets, but wider adoption in the U.S. is limited by aggressive rhizome spread, difficult harvest, poor access to named cultivars, and very limited reliable information on cultivar performance. These barriers create uncertainty for growers interested in trialing or expanding sunchoke production.
This project will evaluate available sunchoke germplasm for rhizome behavior, tuber traits, and field performance to identify cultivars better suited to growers in the North Central region. Greenhouse rhizome phenotyping will be used to compare cultivars for rhizome number, length, and thickness under controlled conditions. Multi-location field and on-farm trials will then evaluate selected cultivars for growth habit, yield, harvestability, tuber traits, and market fit. Farmer collaborators will help assess cultivars under real farm conditions and provide feedback on harvest ease, culinary appeal, and marketability.
Expected outcomes include identification of cultivars with more manageable rhizome behavior and useful tuber characteristics, practical information to guide grower cultivar selection, and baseline data to support future breeding and crop development. Results will be shared through field days, fact sheets, cultivar summaries, presentations, and outreach events designed for growers, Extension, and other stakeholders.
Project evaluation will measure both research participation and outreach impact. We will track farmer involvement, attendance at educational events, requests for planting material and production information, and follow-up feedback on cultivar trialing and selection decisions. Surveys and outreach responses will be used to assess knowledge gain, grower interest, and intended or actual behavior change.
These outcomes are expected to help farmers reduce risk in adopting sunchoke, improve cultivar selection for their production and market needs, and better assess whether the crop fits within diversified farming systems in the North Central region.
Project objectives from proposal:
Our proposal will assist small-to-medium farms and specialty-crop growers, interested in resilient and alternative crops to cultivate sunchoke and increase the diversity of their cropping systems . We will also develop teaching materials such as extension presentation, factsheets and survey to distribute to extension educators, master gardeners, and community gardens focused on nutrition and local food supply.
Sunchoke growers and those who are potentially interested in growing this native American crop currently face major barriers to adoption, due to limited access to cultivars, little reliable information on cultivar performance, difficulty to control the plant spread and laborious harvest. aggressive rhizome spread, difficult harvest, limited access to named cultivars, and . As a result, sunchoke growers often lack the information needed to select varieties that fit their production systems and markets.
This project will provide growers with evaluated cultivar information on rhizome aggressiveness, tuber traits, and raised beds performance, allowing them to make more informed decisions about cultivar selection, harvest strategy, and market fit. Participating farmers will also receive planting stock of selected cultivars to directly trial on their farms.
Farmers and other audiences will increase their knowledge of cultivar differences in growth habit, tuber characteristics, and management suitability, and improve their understanding of sunchoke's production challenges, market opportunities, and fit within diversified farming systems.
