Summary

In-depth training on sustainable agriculture techniques and systems was conducted in1997 through a series of three on-farm workshops. State and federal agencies were invite along with Extension agriculture and natural resource agents. One workshop included producers from the area who also received the training. The training built on information received during the 1995 and 1996 training sessions.

The training focused on different systems being used by producers that are reducing costs, providing profitability and maintaining rural communities. These producers were the primary educators with Extension specialists and NRCS area staff providing supplemental and complimentary information regarding the various components of the system. A no-till system and two organic systems were reviewed. One of the organic systems included a SARE producer grant project-growing and finishing beef cattle on alfalfa pasture. Another workshop involving a value-added enterprise of an organic cleaning facility on a farm was canceled due to poor attendance.
