Cleaning Bagging Facility for Better Marketing

Summary

Dry edible seed producers want a cleaning and bagging facility that can give them more marketable product options. This more intensive marketing strategy ultimately results in better cash flow.

Objective: To complete an edible seed finishing and bagging facility for use on- or off-farm to furnish a value-added product to retailers and consumers.

The producer remodeled an older barn into the new processing facility by installing a fanning mill, gravity table, and sewing machine. The producer also cleared a cleaning room, complete with an exhaust fan, disk separator and gravity table screen; wash room; storage; office; and bagging area, complete with platform scales, sack holder, holding bins, and a fork lift. The producer also installed electricity and plumbing in the entire facility.

Results: The facility cleans and bags sunflowers, flax, dry edible beans, blue corn, millet and radish seed in five- to 50-pound bags or bulk.
