A Youth-operated Certified Compost Production and Distribution Scheme

Summary

Many producers have questions about what kind of operations can and cannot be certified organic.

Objective: To produce a high quality compost that can be certified organic.

The producer recruited youth to research the criteria that a compost and supply distribution system must have to become certified organic, as well as to develop the project. He also ordered chemical tests to be completed as part of the certification process.

Results: Eighteen growers produced 11 vegetable crops on four sites in three communities. The growers composted plant materials and horse manure in seven bins. Youth growers harvested and marketed the produce to local buyers. These youth also educated their buyers about composting and sustainable gardening, while promoting their healthy food.
