Urban Agricultural Youth Program
Summary
Work activities:
We got our Dual Compost Tumblers, books, soaker hoses, and tumbler wheel. With our books we have exposed the youth to healthy lifestyles and habits by bringing in community leaders that work in fields that promote healthy living (a nurse and a doctor.)
Results so far:
We found out dryland farming is not always good for some vegetables. We found that the soaker hoses work better and have helped with growth. Harvesting, washing, and cooling the vegetables/fruit helps them keep much longer. Without compost tumler, we have been able to make compost in 5 to 6 weeks, which is beneficial for the children to see and do.
Work Plan for next year:
We are going to start most of our seed in February to be able to keep the weeds to little or none. We are going to use the greenhouse and a cold frame.
Outreach:
We invite the community, neighborhoods, afriends and family so we all can do these activities together. We have Family and Friends Days to give demonstrations.
