Farm on Wheels, Marketing to the Consumer

Summary

Corporate integration in agriculture is forcing many farmers out of business. The producer hopes her expansion into diverse organic food production will open local markets and keep local dollars within the community.

Objective: To bring value back to local organic foods.

The producer expanded her organic soybean farm to also include dairy, poultry, beef and pork. Milk is sold through the local "Organic Valley Family of Farms" cooperative. Chicken, beef and pork cuts and carcasses are marketed through various community-supported agricultural systems and farmers markets.

Results: The producer marketed 36 head of cattle at $0.70 per pound live with price additions to account for processing and marketing costs. In addition, a total of 68 head of hogs were sold.
