Portable Sheep Dairy

Summary

Sheep can graze on fields that are steep, rocky, and difficult to mow, and the goal of this two-year project is to demonstrate that sheep dairying can be accessible to farmers with abandoned pasture land and limited capital. The farmer will build a portable milking parlor and manage a herd on an educational farm, demonstrating both the moveable parlor and the pasture-management benefits. Outreach will be through materials prepared for the public that visits the farm, through trade shows and conferences, displays at farmer gatherings and fairs, and through an extension Web site.
