La Placita Gardens Composting Research Project
Summary
Objectives/Performance Targets
Continuation of a community education, demonstration and research
composting project. The compost project is also the foundation for creating a more healthy, fertile and productive soil for long-term sustainability of the farm and the fulfillment of its mission to serve as a community education site promoting local agriculture, open space, wildlife habitat, cultural education and community collaboration.
Accomplishments/Milestones
* Initial clearing and establishment of the site that was found to be
the most accessible and appropriate for the project.
* Requested installation of water source to the site from Bernalillo County Land Management Department.
*Designed and constructed compost piles and purchased materials and compost bins.
*Demonstration of cool and hot composting methods.
* Vermi-composting education with start-up kits for local schools.
* Networking to establish community collaborations with local schools, businesses and organizations who support composting through education and a learn by doing approach.
The foundation has been established for a long-term successful
composting education program that will continue to grow and share useful, practical and beneficial information to all members of the community. We will reach our point of accelerating momentum and exponential growth in the spring and summer of 2011.
