Monitoring Program for Biologically Integrated Orchard Systems (BIOS) in Walnuts

Summary

Currently, conventional walnut production in California is marked by relatively heavy use of synthetic N fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides. Information is needed on how alternative biological practices work on different soil types, walnut varieties and irrigation practices. A specialized monitoring program will provide more hands-on, in-field information for the growers. Enriched with a deeper understanding of walnut orchard ecology, growers will ultimately be provided with more tools for sustainable orchard management.
