Annual Forages for Dryland Rotations

Summary

In eastern Montana, forage production is limited by the low availability of irrigation water coupled with low rainfall. The major cropping system is rotational small grain crop fallow. Incorporating an annual forage into the existing cropping system will improve the livestock industry and provide an opportunity to increase or sustain soil quality. Field trials will be conducted on different annual forage crop types to determine production feasibility in the current cropping system.
