A Temporary Step to a Permanent Solution: Use of Strawbales to Construct a Wind Barrier and System of Terrace Planting Beds

Summary

A wind barrier system of straw bales stacked six to eight bales high will be constructed to provide shelter while trees are becoming established to form a permanent windbreak. In addition, a series of 5-foot-wide terraces with a single bale height will be completed as the retaining front wall. These terraces will be filled with a mixture of manure, rotted sawdust, and compost and will provide new planting beds on uncultivable land.
