Developing Multimedia Resources for Educators in Informal and Formal Agricultural Education Settings

Summary

In 2005, we focused on developing the content, examples, and presentation for the video. The content of the video is based on information gathered in 2004, which gave us direction regarding language and how to present sustainable agriculture in the context of farming decisions. We met with producers who are using sustainable practices and fit those examples into the major themes of the video. With a script in hand, the video production crew visited producers to gather their stories and examples. Those examples have been edited to fit into a video which will be less than 20 minutes long.

Objectives/Performance Targets

Our objectives are to increase understanding of sustainable agriculture and example practices among farmers, future farmers and consumers; to strengthen the relationship among University Extension Educators and their communities; to increase the number of farmers who are willing to try sustainable practices; and to build a high school curriculum that includes sustainable agriculture.

Developing a video that describes sustainable agriculture and provides examples of real farmers using sustainable practices is an excellent way to introduce the topic in educational settings (including the high school classroom) and Extension educational programming.

Accomplishments/Milestones

In 2005, we wrote the script for the video and completed the filming.

Impacts and Contributions/Outcomes

The video is not yet complete, but we have noticed interest among Extension Educators and high school teachers in using the video to introduce the concepts of sustainable agriculture. The video will be completed in 2006 and we will make it available widely.
