2010 Annual Report for LS10-225
Evaluation of Crop Rotation for High Value Cool Season Horticultural Crop Production in Organic and Sustainable Systems
Objectives/Performance Targets
This is the first year of this project with experiments underway at the Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center in Lyons, GA and at the Durham Horticulture Farm in Watkinsville, GA. We got off to a late start this fall with our plantings and the winter has been particularly severe, however, we have been able to collect some data on the initial plantings.
Accomplishments/Milestones
Data collected so far has included yield information, soil test data, and economic data (i.e. material costs & time). The graduate students are on board and have been making significant contributions. We are on track with completed harvests (broccoli & carrots) and expect to start harvesting onions and strawberries shortly. Plantings of beans, potatoes, southernpeas, lettuce, and sugar snap peas are expected to be completed this spring.
Impacts and Contributions/Outcomes
It is too early in this study to measure any impacts or contributions. We are planning on meeting with growers, however, later this summer. In addition, a field day is planned at the Durham Horticulture Farm this fall when we hope to highlight work on this project.
