    Proposal abstract:

    Cereal rye is the default overwintering cover crop in the Northeast. It is affordable, reliable, and easy to establish. However, aggressive spring growth creates a management paradox: the same vigor that makes rye valuable for soil protection and weed suppression also makes it difficult to terminate without aggressive tillage or early chemical burndown. For diversified vegetable producers, this often means either terminating rye weeks before planting - leaving soil bare during the most vulnerable period - or avoiding overwintering cover crops altogether. At Momentum Ag's January 2026 winter meeting, farmers from across New England identified excessive rye biomass as a management issue, but with no alternative options that were equally flexible in terms of establishment.

    This project evaluates winter barley and winter wheat varieties as lower-biomass alternatives to cereal rye on diversified farms across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut. Our objectives are to: (1) identify winter cereal varieties that reliably overwinter in the Northeast, produce substantially less biomass than rye, and are available at comparable cost; and (2) determine whether lower-biomass alternatives encourage farmers to maintain living cover longer into spring.

    The project pairs quantitative data from three university research stations (UMass, URI, UConn) with qualitative farmer assessments on 10 working farms. Researchers will plant 4-6 alternative winter cereal varieties alongside rye in replicated plots, measuring canopy height, anthesis date, and aboveground biomass. Farmers will plant one alternative variety next to their usual rye, document planting and termination dates and methods, take dated photos with a measuring reference, and participate in brief post-season interviews about management fit. This design intentionally assigns each group the work they are best positioned to do: researchers collect precise agronomic data, while farmers evaluate how alternatives perform within real production systems.

    Over two growing seasons (2026-27 and 2027-28), the project will generate both the quantitative performance data and the practical management insights needed for credible variety recommendations. Results will be shared through farmer field walks in each participating state (spring 2028), the annual UMass research farm tour, and a presentation at Momentum Ag's January 2029 winter meeting (projected attendance: 60-75 farmers). A multi-state extension bulletin co-authored by all three research stations will synthesize findings into an accessible guide to winter cereal alternatives to rye.

    Project objectives from proposal:

    This project asks: Can lower-biomass winter cereals serve as practical alternatives to cereal rye for diversified Northeast farms?

    Objective 1: Evaluate agronomic performance of alternative winter cereals. Plant 4-6 winter barley and winter wheat varieties alongside cereal rye in replicated trials at three research stations (UMass, URI, UConn) over two growing seasons (2026-27 and 2027-28). Measure canopy height, anthesis date, and aboveground biomass for each variety. Identify which varieties reliably overwinter, produce significantly less biomass than rye, and are available from commercial sources at comparable cost.

    Objective 2: Assess farmer management experience with alternative winter cereals. Enroll 10 farmers across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont to plant one alternative variety alongside cereal rye on their farms in both seasons. Collect qualitative data through standardized photo documentation and post-season interviews on planting experience, termination method and timing, management fit, and willingness to continue use. Ask whether lower-biomass alternatives could result in later termination dates and more days of living cover.

    Objective 3: Build a collaborative, multi-state network for applied cover crop research. Establish a working model for paired extension-farmer research by coordinating methods, data collection, and outreach across three states. Assess the process through team reflection and farmer feedback to inform future collaborative projects.

    Objective 4: Disseminate findings to Northeast farmers and service providers. Share results through four farmer field walks (one per state, spring 2028), the UMass research farm tour, a co-authored multi-state extension bulletin, and a presentation at Momentum Ag's January 2029 winter meeting.
