Proposal abstract:
This project aims to evaluate and promote saffron (Crocus sativus) as a high-value specialty crop to improve farm profitability and resilience in West Virginia and the broader Appalachian region. Characterized by small, diversified farms, challenging terrain, and limited access to markets, agriculture in this region often generates lower income than neighboring states. However, abundant water resources, diverse microclimates, and proximity to population centers create strong potential for intensive specialty crop production. Saffron, with its high value and low land requirement, represents a promising diversification opportunity.
Building on existing research from institutions such as the University of Vermont, University of Rhode Island, and University of Georgia, this project addresses key knowledge gaps limiting saffron adoption in the Northeastern U.S., particularly related to corm persistence, daughter corm development, and long-term production systems. While previous studies have established baseline recommendations for planting density, weed management, and general viability, questions remain regarding perennialization and cost-effective management strategies under regional conditions.
The project has three primary objectives. First, we will synthesize existing knowledge and develop regionally relevant Extension materials, including fact sheets and online resources, incorporating both published research and findings from ongoing studies in West Virginia. Second, we will establish on-farm research trials with three cooperating growers to evaluate management strategies addressing major production challenges, including high establishment costs, environmental constraints, and pest and weed pressures. These trials will assess winter protection methods, dormancy management through tarping, and key performance indicators such as yield, corm multiplication, persistence, and carbohydrate dynamics. Third, we will disseminate results through a comprehensive outreach program that includes field days, grower engagement, Extension collaboration, conference presentations, and a peer-reviewed publication in HortTechnology.
The project is expected to directly engage 50-60 growers, providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to evaluate saffron as part of a diversified cropping system. Economic analyses suggest that, despite relatively high establishment costs, saffron can generate significant returns, particularly if perennial production systems reduce the need for frequent corm replacement. By focusing on practical, research-based solutions and strong stakeholder engagement, this project aims to enhance the sustainability, profitability, and adoption of saffron production in West Virginia and the surrounding region.

Project Objectives
The overarching goal of this project is to expand the current body of knowledge on saffron production through on-farm trials, develop a comprehensive outreach program to support growers in integrating saffron into their crop mix, and build grower confidence in adopting saffron as a viable specialty crop.
Growers across West Virginia have been engaged to better understand challenges to adoption, knowledge gaps, and effective strategies for disseminating saffron production information. Participants were recruited through the West Virginia Small Farms Conference as well as through established relationships developed via prior research and outreach efforts.
Objective 1: Compile, evaluate, and curate existing knowledge on saffron cultivation in the Northeastern United States.
Objective 2: Design and implement on-farm trials, incorporating grower input, to evaluate different saffron production methods under regional conditions.
Objective 3: Disseminate research findings and farmer experiences through targeted outreach efforts to support the adoption of saffron production.
