2016 Annual Report for OW16-031
Building Leadership Capacity with Rural Alaskan Youth
Summary
The project goal was to sponsor youth camps during the summer months in rural Alaskan communities so range and rate of project activities will ramp up as spring and summer approach. We have begun coordinating with communities particularly the Tribal Government of St Paul Island to develop the camp structure and schedules. We will be integrating the Youth Reindeer camp with Bering Sea Days a week long science program developed by the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island–Tribal Government and St. Paul School science, math, and technology teachers.
The event brings scientists to the Pribilof Islands to give students an opportunity to learn about marine science and marine science careers and to give scientists a chance to interact with K-12 students and test their abilities to present complex concepts simply. Our intent is to partner with this event to include reindeer ecology, range science and animal production. In this way we can expand our impact to include youth from many of the surrounding communities as they will be attending the Bering Sea Days event.
Objectives/Performance Targets
To engage youth of rural Alaskan communities to build leadership and life skills.
Accomplishments/Milestones
Initial planning and coordination with rural Alaskan communities to partner our upcoming reindeer youth events with other community events during the summer of 2017. Travel to and among rural Alaskan communities is very expensive so we are attempting to partner with other scheduled community activities.
Impacts and Contributions/Outcomes
We are in the planning and coordinating stage of our youth camps so our current outcomes are tentative scheduling and venue of summer 2017 events.
