2011 Annual Report for YENC10-026
Sustainable Ranch Resource Management
Summary
12-23-2011
The students during this semester have worked primarily on range management. We have done this by using the UNL Extension EC150. They have learned and become efficient in identifying 40 plants, and can give the plants forage values. We worked at this for several weeks, with numerous field trips to get hands on identification, at the end of which we competed at the district Range Judging Contest. As the weather got colder we began discussing grazing managements, and primarily the need for a diversified landscape for wildlife. There are many ways to achieve the diversified landscape, whether it be using continues small herd grazing, differed rotation and so on. The Range Management: Principles and Practices was our main resource, in addition to this we talked with a couple of different local producers who not only raise cattle but also market wildlife hunting. Obviously when Deer hunting season came around the young men wanted to spend some time in the field where we were able to see some 125-130 class Mule Bucks.
