Proposal abstract:
Youth will be engaged in sustainable gardening practices, impacting their daily lives. Utilizing school greenhouses, food bank feed sites, YMCA youth gardens, church gardens and farmers markets to reach those most in need. Education will be hands-in-the-dirt and focused on nutrient management, organic agriculture and pollinator habitats. Youth will be mixing their own garden soil, planting seed starts, learning about beneficial insect and pollinator habitats and researching the benefit of organic agriculture. Improving quality of life for youth, teaching them to grow their own nutritious foods, make an impact on our environment and improving our community standards of nutrition together.
Project objectives from proposal:
- Introduce youth to regenerative farming with hands-on sessions with experts and local farmers practicing organic, sustainable practices. Youth will learn to harvest seeds, start seeds, mix organic soils, plant pollinator gardens, map gardens with succession farming, grow and cook with produce, resulting in healthy meals.
- Introduce youth to agriculture in a way that resonates with their daily lives and impacts the way they look at food.
- Youth will take pictures, put together video testimonials from students, to be shared at local community meetings and school presentations. Excess produce growth will be donated to those in need by youth.
