Making a Sustainable Feed for My Chickens

Summary

WORK ACTIVITIES
I have planted crops including the following: Sunflowers, Squash, Peanuts, and Giant Mangles. Due to the drought we have experienced crop failure, but I plan to re plant the same crops this season. Experiencing the drought taught me that I need to make modifications to my irrigation system to ensure that my plants get the adequate amount of water they need to survive the harsh heat of the summer months. The Giant Mangles that I have produced grew surprisingly well, with that I went ahead and I supplemented my feed. For my hogs I gave them whole mangles; I fed the tops to my goats and I also feed the whole Mangles to my Chickens.

OUTREACH
I have shared the information from my feed project with the people that attended the Lincoln University Hog Production workshop and the Lincoln University Goat Production Workshop. There were fifteen attendees at the workshops. My advisor is keeping them up-to-date with the information that I have provided.

WORK PLAN FOR 2013
The up-coming plans that I have come up with for the growing season of 2013 is to replant the cereal crops. I am also looking at some drought resistant grains.
