Proposal summary:
Based on the findings of the 2007 SARE-funded project, Growing Highly Nutritious Staple Seed Crops Using Intensive and Sustainable Methods, there is strong and broad community support in Southeastern Ohio for localized procurement of staple foods such as grains, beans, pseudo-cereals, and oil-seeds, as well as many opportunities for value-added niches. By involving well-established local farm operations and securing the appropriate equipment, we hope to demonstrate that this addition to the region's local food system is likely to prove beneficial to the agriculture and economy of the region, as well as the other localities as a successful mode.
