Growing a Sustainable Portland Metropolitan Foodshed

Summary

Progress to date

Since the project award, we have accomplished the following:

1. Fleshed out a workplan (attached);

2. Signed subcontracts with subcontractors;

3. Developed a definition of the food shed that provides a framing for the project;

4. Developed and tested a survey for growers and potential growers that will feed in to the needs assessment. We conducted the test at the Horticulture Society meetings and used it to revise the survey.

5. Developed a website for the survey that also describes the objectives of the project, http://www.pdxfoodshed.com/.

Objectives/Performance Targets

Acceptance of the Concept of the Metropolitan Food Shed vision and defintion by producer groups and local governments

The definition has been drafted and is being circulated for comment. We have little feedback to date on how well it is accepted.

Accomplishments/Milestones

Food Shed Definition

This has been drafted and is attached.

Project Web site

The project website, http://www.pdxfoodshed.com/, has been launched.

Survey of Growers

The survey has been drafted and IRB approval has been secured. We tested the survey with several groups of growers at the Horticulture Society meeting in January. Based on their feedback, we revised the survey, and it is now on our project’s website and collecting data. We have been conducting a snowball sample and conducting outreach through the Horticulture meeting, through cooperation with farm supply stores and by tabling at events.
