Proposal abstract:
GROW will partner with Western Technical College(WTC) to provide hands-on urban agriculture learning experiences in our state-of-the-art greenhouse for middle and high school students. Greenhouse field trip opportunities will introduce students to Sustainable Agriculture practices that are ecologically sound, economically viable and socially responsible in an urban setting. Additionally, through partnership with WTC students will gain first-hand knowledge of the Agribusiness and Horticulture programs and future career paths available in our community.
Project objectives from proposal:
- Increase urban agriculture knowledge and skills to 50 high school students through multiple hands-on work sessions with urban growers practicing organic and diverse growing techniques.
- Introduce at least six groups of middle school and high school aged youth to sustainable agriculture career opportunities through agribusiness and horticulture program campus tours and hands-on project based learning in the greenhouse.
- Share results of the learning experiences and partnership with regional school districts and community partners to build upon the outcomes.
